Actuarial Science Faculty

James Bridgeman, FSA*, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics. He holds an M.A. in Mathematics and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. Professor Bridgeman came to UConn from the positions of Chief Financial Officer and Chief Actuary at Aetna International. His research interests include asset-liability modeling and actuarial applications of stochastic modeling.

Rachel Brown, FSA*, is an adjunct instructor in Actuarial Science and a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries. She has varied experience in the life insurance industry (group, individual, and reinsurance) and in the development of actuarial modeling software. She was director of the Actuarial Science program at University of Hartford and has taught numerous Applied Modeling (Course 7) seminars for the Society of Actuaries.

John Dinius, FSA*, FSA, MAAA, CLU, ChFC, has more than thirty years of experience in the life and health insurance industry, and is experienced in the design, pricing, valuation, and management of individual life insurance and annuity products.
Prior to joining the actuarial faculty at the University of Connecticut, John was a principal consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he provided consulting and audit services to life insurance companies. Before that, he was a vice president and actuary at Aetna Inc., where he served in a variety of roles, including extensive involvement in product development and pricing, and also a wide range of regulatory matters.

Louis J. Lombardi, FSA*, is Director of the Actuarial Science Program. He has over twenty-five years of experience within the insurance industry and is a member of the Society of Actuaries. He has served on numerous committees and has published several articles. The article "Relationships between Statutory and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)", Transactions, Volume XL, Part I, 1988 was recognized as "Best Paper Published in 1988" by the Society of Actuaries. He was also the founder of the Triton reserve valuations system which calculates statutory, tax and GAAP reserves for over fifty life insurance companies.

Gregory M. Smith, FSA*, is an adjunct instructor in Actuarial Science and a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries. His work experience includes roles in healthcare pricing, life reinsurance, financial reporting, life pricing, consulting and education. He has served on the Life Insurance Financial Reporting Council of the American Academy of Actuaries and as an instructor at the SOA/AAA Seminar on FASB Statements 141 and 142. He is currently working as a Vice President for Research and Publications at Conning and Company.

Emil Valdez, FSA*, Ph.D.

Jeyaraj Vadiveloo, FSA*, is an Adjunct Professor. He has a Ph.D. in Statistics and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. Dr. Vadiveloo is a senior manager at Deloitte and Touche.

Charles Vinsonhaler, ASA**, is a Professor and former Head of the Department of Mathematics. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics and is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries. He has been honored as Connecticut Professor of the Year and as a UConn Teaching Fellow.
