Text:  Mathematics Beyond the Numbers, Custom Edition, by Gilbert and Hatcher

This course will stress problem solving skills and the development of reasoning skills in an interactive setting.  The mathematics involved is not difficult, but most of it is not routine either.  We will see how some of this mathematics allows us to better understand the world surrounding us.

Homework Policy:  Homework will be assigned regularly (almost every lecture), and the due date will be posted online.  On the day that homework is due, an in-class worksheet reflecting a sample of the material in the homework assignment will be distributed at the beginning of lecture.  These worksheets are short in duration (< 10 minutes) and students can use any written materials (but not the text) to complete them.  The two lowest homework grades will be dropped.

Quizzes:  Quizzes will be given regularly (almost every week), and may or may not be announced.  Typically, a quiz will be given covering 1-2 sections at a time, two lectures after completing the material.  The two lowest quiz grades will be dropped.

Exams:  Three non-cumulative midterm exams (50 minutes in duration) will be given during class on:

Wednesday February 7 (1.1-1.4 and 2.1, 2.2)
Friday March 16 (3.1-3.5 and 4.1, 4.2)
Wednesday April 11 (4.1-4.8)

The final exam is cumulative, and will be given during the MATH block.

Late work/Makeup Policy:  Homework worksheets and quizzes cannot be made up.  If a student misses a regularly administered worksheet or quiz, the missing work will be excused only under reasonable DOCUMENTED circumstances.

There will be no makeup examinations given during the semester for students who miss the regularly scheduled hour exam.  If a student misses one midterm exam, they must present DOCUMENTATION explaining their absence and his/her grade on the portion of the final examination covering the material on which the exam was based will be fairly weighted and used to replace the missing grade.  Students are permitted to miss two exams only under dire DOCUMENTED circumstances.  Students who miss the final exam must receive permission from the office of the Dean of Students to make up the final, and receive the grade “Absent” in the interim.  “Incomplete” or “Absent” grades must be made up by the third week of the next semester (students MUST see their instructor during the first week of classes to schedule the makeup exam).

Final grades will be computed as follows:

Best hour exam
20%
Second Best hour exam
20%
Worst hour exam
10%
Homework
10%
Quizzes
10%
Final Exam
30%

Students who are disabled and require extra time for assignments and examinations must confer with the instructor to make suitable arrangements, prior to the date of the assignment.  Any student who plans to miss an assignment because of some extenuating circumstance must confer with the instructor beforehand (and may be required to present relevant DOCUMENTATION) if they wish to be excused from the assignment.

Please check your huskymail often; it will be used to distribute important information pertaining to the class.  Please make use of office hours and/or the Math Learning Centers if you experience difficulty with course material after it is covered in class.  Students who actively read the material, try the book examples, do the homework exercises, and seek help when they encounter difficulties tend to learn more, and this is reflected in their final grade.
