The Department of Mathematics runs the TA Program to give support and guidance to its graduate students in teaching issues. This program is coordinated by the Graduate Director for Instructional Development, Sarah Glaz.

Fall 2008


  • First Week Activities
  • Math 5000: Mathematical Pedagogy and Computer Skills, is a mandatory course for all new graduate students who are either supported as TAs in the Fall, or hope to be supported as TAs in the Spring. Register to one section and attend both. If you have a scheduling conflict, please, e-mail Sarah Glaz.
    • Section 1: Mathematical Pedagogy, Monday 4:00 - 5:30, MSB 118. Instructors: Tom DeFranco, Sarah Glaz, and Chuck Vinsonhaler
    • Section 2: Computer Skills, Tuesday 4:00 - 4:50, MSB 203. Instructor: Kevin Marinelli
  • Classroom Observations: Starting the third week of classes, new TAs will be contacted to set up an appointment for a classroom observation and teaching consultation. Classroom observations and teaching consultations will be conducted by Sarah Glaz, Steve Miller, and Gene Spiegel.
  • Workshop on Teaching Statements: The workshop will be run by Dr. Catherine Ross, ITL Associate Director and UConn TA Program Director. It will be held during two SIGMA Seminars: Wednesdays, Oct. 15, at 5pm., and November 5, at 4:30 pm., in MSB 118. The first meeting will go over the principles of writing effective Teaching Statements. The second meeting will be for anyone who wishes to get feedback on a teaching statement they have written. The workshop is open to all graduate students and faculty of the mathematics department.
